대장경 내 이야기
제목 : 23) 수나라 경사 대흥선사 석보헌전(釋寶憲傳)
보헌은 정주(鄭州) 사람이며, 보진(寶鎭)이라는 율사의 제자이다. 어릴 때부터 율사에게 의지하여 계율의 조목들을 받들며 도량을 살피고 재능을 관찰하면서 그의 대법(大法)을 원만히 이어받았다. 그리하여 구족계를 받던 날에는 다만 글과 말만 받들었고 행동규범에 있어서는 미리 다 원만하게 갖추고 있었다. 그리고 또한 그에게는 스승과 제자의 도리도 있었고 널리 불법을 펴는 덕업도 있었다. 개황(開皇) 초엽에는 보진 율사와 함께 서울에 와서 대흥선사에 추석하였는데, 몸가짐이 조화롭고 깨끗하였으며 속된 말을 하지 않았다. 인수(仁壽) 연간에 칙명을 받들어 홍주(洪州)에 사리탑을 세우게 되었는데, 홍주는 바로 ‘예장(豫章)’이라고 불리던 곳이었다. 일행이 그 고을을 향하여 가던 도중에 강에 가로막히게 되었는데, 그 강물의 유량(流量)이 적어서 진흙물로 변하여 배로 건널 수가 없었다. 이때 모든 사람들의 힘도 거의 소진되어서 더 이상 앞으로 나아갈 수 도리가 없었으나, 정해진 기일이 임박하였으므로 도속들이 모두 당황해하고 두려워하였다. 보헌은 마침내 마음속으로 사리에 의지하여 강을 건너게 해주기를 청하였더니, 갑자기 하늘에서 백조(白鳥)가 내려와 뱃머리를 천천히 날면서 왔다 갔다 하는 것이 마치 인도하는 듯하였다. 곧 사람을 보내서 그 새의 뒤를 따라가니, 드디어 유량이 많은 수맥(水脈)을 만나게 되었고 밤새도록 배를 띄워 안전하고 지장 없이 건너 편 언덕에 도달할 수 있었다. 그후 보헌은 서울에 돌아와 곧 생을 마쳤다.
